About Me

At 20 years young I've realized it's time to stop talking about it and be about it. Opportunity will not fall out of the sky and in my lap. I must hunt it down and make it mine. And I shall!!

My goal as a musician & model and all around performer is to spread a message of self determination and culture. Be who you are, 'cause that's exactly what I'm doing!

Though I was born in the thoroughest borough, BK, my grandparents originated in Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados. My great-grandmother was Iroquois Indian.

INTERVIEW

What's your full name?
Tajh Danielle 'Afro Barbie' Sutton

Ok Afro Barbie, what made you want to be a model?
After being chosen to attend Barbizon modeling school in 2002 and experiencing the confidence boost that taking pictures gave me, I developed an immediate affinity for modeling. But as I began to study fashion, different types of modeling, advertising, marketing & merchandising, etc. I decided that I NEEDED to be a model and represent the beautiful women of color in this world who aren't a size 2 or 12, and may not be 5'9, even in heels. I strongly feel that the average woman of color is horribly under-represented and when Black models do get a certain amount of exposure and work they're either extremely light or dark with supermodel proportions or very voluptuous. I'm neither one of those things, but I am beautiful. I want the world to know that there is more than one type of beauty that should be acceptable!

Who would you consider your role models in the modeling industry?
I love Coco Rocha's style and her edginess. She doesn't have your average supermodel's face, but she's AMAZING. Chanel Iman takes amazing pictures. I've always idolized the Vickies girls, Alessandra, Gisele, Heidi, Adriana. My largest influence as a model for years was Tyra Banks.

Chanel Iman

Any other role models that aren't in the modeling industry?
My wonderful mother is the quintessential role model. She did a little modeling herself in her hey day =)

What do you do for fun?
I love to step, dance and teach. I've been working in various public elementary, junior highs and high schools for over 3 years teaching hip hop dance, step and runway choreography. I love children! My passions also include making people laugh, writing, and MUSIC as I am also an aspiring singer/ songwriter. I like to dance with my son =)

How would you describe yourself?
I am extremely maternal, artistic, eclectic, goal oriented, multi-talented, opinionated, personable and loyal!

What do you consider the best part of your body?
My hair is my crowning glory. I think locks are amazing and there's no international model on the scene with them, so I want to be the first! I also love the fact that I'm so short. You don't have to be 5'8 to be beautiful!

Are guys intimidated by you because of your looks?
They say they are, but I think that's just a cop out. Say hello! You never know what will happen and neither do I.

What makes you smile?
My child! He is my sun, moon and stars. My family and friends in general make me smile as well. They're all hilarious!

What's must-see-tv for you?
I watch Making The Band 4 and Taking the Stage RELIGIOUSLY! I love to see young, talented african americans like myself be successful and in the limelight.

What advice do you have for young women who are trying to become models?
"If you are going to do anything, do it to perfection and surround yourself with like-minded rebels". -John Galliano

If there was going to be a movie about your life, what would be the title?
"Had to be Worth it"
